GKids and Toho to Re-release Shin Godzilla in Black and White ORTHOchromatic Theatrical Edition

Ahead of the October 2025 release of Shin Godzilla in 4K UHD, GKids, Shout Factory and Toho are re-releasing the 2016 monster movie in U.S. theaters in a black and white ORTHOchromatic edition, this Sunday, August 31, 2025.

In Shin Godzilla: ORTHOchromatic, Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi’s feature is reborn in stunning black and white. This version was originally released in 2023 in Japan leading up to Godzilla’s 70th anniversary, adding new dimension to the film’s visual impact by rendering it in orthochromatic (“ortho” for short) black and white. Ortho is a type of monochrome inspired by the texture of traditional orthochromatic film, characterized by starker contrasts and more pronounced blacks.

Starring Hiroki Hasegawa, Yutaka Takenouchi and Satomi Ishihara, Shin Godzilla offers an origin story to one of cinema’s greatest creations. Propelled by Academy Award-winning visual effects and rapid fire dialogue, Shin Godzilla is equal parts exhilarating action film and deep political satire, worthy of the franchise’s a-list pop culture history.
