The Academy of Music was opened by film mogul William Fox in 1926 and became one of the major movie theaters in the Union Square entertainment district. During the 1970’s it became a concert hall at night, while screening kung fu films during the day. Three or four evenings a week, the best rock bands of the era performed there.
By the late 70’s Academy of Music become a full-time concert venue, eventually being renamed The Palladium. In May 1985 the interior was remodeled to become a multi-story disco club with the same name.
